Dudley business introduces niche service and sustainable upgrades through strategic growth programme

Led by dynamic husband-and-wife team Martin and Annika Cunningham, Dudley business MAC Physio & Pilates Limited, has established itself as a cornerstone in Stourbridge's health and wellness community.

With over 30 years of combined experience, the Cunninghams have expertly navigated the realms of prevention, treatment and the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal care and sports injuries across the UK, Scotland, and Australia. Having worked across diverse settings such as the NHS, private sector, clinical Pilates, and professional sports, Martin and Annika have established their business, leveraging their rich background to serve their local community.

MAC Physio & Pilates sought to expand its services and address environmental concerns simultaneously. The clinic aimed to introduce Reformer Pilates a niche service which Annika is trained in and improve facility conditions through sustainable upgrades. To offer this they needed to introduce new equipment which came with a significant cost attached to it.

Martin Cunningham - MAC Physio & Pilates Limited said:
"Paul spoke in plain English and really helped simplify what can seem very technical terms for a small business owner, so that I could understand the process and fine tune what  was needed to help the business going forwards. The process would have been extremely tough to navigate without his assistance and has made a significant impact to our business in terms of growth."

Alongside the significant capital investment required for new equipment, seasonal temperature fluctuations limited the use of clinic spaces, affecting service availability and comfort due to the absence of efficient heating and cooling solutions.

Implementing a solution

Through the Business Growth West Midlands in Dudley and Investment Readiness (Access to Finance) Programmes, MAC Physio & Pilates secured grant funding for the purchase of reformer Pilates equipment which enabled them to diversify and enhance service offerings. The funding also allowed them to install a heat pump and air conditioning system to achieve efficient temperature control, contributing to the clinic’s decarbonisation efforts.

The investments enabled MAC Physio & Pilates to launch a new Pilates service, which boosted revenue by 50% within a month and led to the recruitment of additional instructors.

Additionally, these improvements enhanced the usability of their facility year-round, creating a better working environment and facilitating the expansion of physiotherapy services.

Paul Sampson, Business Growth Adviser – BGWM in Dudley Programme said:
“It is great to see Martin and Annika growing and investing in their business, seeing the opportunity to expand their services and being dynamic and pro-active in using the support available through Business Growth West Midlands to help them achieve their goals.”

As a result of the investment, MAC Physio & Pilates anticipates a growth of 50-75% in Pilates services, which will include hiring additional instructors to meet demand. Similarly, they expect a 20-25% increase in physiotherapy sales, with plans to hire part-time physiotherapists to support new growth.

One of MAC Physio & Pilate’s clients Suzie C, commented "The new Pilates equipment has transformed my experience, providing variety and more availability which truly enhances my journey back to health."

Ambitious growth plans and being sustainable

Leveraging their recent successes, MAC Physio & Pilates is setting ambitious targets for the upcoming year, aiming to boost Pilates services by 50-75% and expand physiotherapy offerings by 20-25%. Additionally, they are committed to enhancing their sustainability practices, with a goal to transition to full solar power by 2025.

The strategic support from the BGWM Dudley and Investment Readiness (Access to Finance) Programmes has catalysed MAC Physio & Pilates not just in service expansion but also in adopting sustainable practices. The installation of a heat pump and air conditioning system has not only made the facility more comfortable but also environmentally friendly, reducing energy costs and supporting the clinic's commitment to sustainability.
